We throw a lot of things out during our life time. Things that have accumulated over the years. Things we have used and abused, or things that never showed a purpose. Things that we didn't want to give up, or things that despite all, needed to be given up. Tangible and the intangible. Found and the bought. It can feel really good to throw things out, organize your bedroom, as if you're reorganizing life as a whole. Things can begin to turtleneck our lives, but can provide great interest at the same time.
The shop that I work, throws away a lot. I always refuse to do it or look. Some are not salvageable, but most could be easily donated or fixed. But instead, filling landfills. I take what I can, when I feel as though I can remake it into something. This is a classic checker board that I grabbed sitting by the garbage waiting to be taken out. It had a wrinkle. Apparently that made it broken and unable to sell. I took it home, added an acrylic wash. I did a pointillism design, and then recreated the checker pattern by adding a blue wash of squares on top. Lastly I spread a thick protective compound to the surface and added cork to the bottom. Now, show me that wrinkle...
